Hi,
I'm Rick Saul and photography has been one of my favorite expressions for most of my life. I started at the age of 8 when I was given a simple camera from our next-door neighbor. I believe it was Spring Cleaning and they no longer wanted the camera. Our family traveled a lot via a car and we also began tent camping. I got to see much of the USA and so I attempted to capture images with my little camera. Back in those days, it was film. So, I had to earn money to buy film and process it. At the age of 12, I learned darkroom processes and I fell in love with black & white processing. Photography wasn't an occupation, it was my favorite pass time and hobby. After college, I was Commissioned in the US Navy and since I had relatively good equipment and photography skills, my Commanding Officer assigned me to be the editor and photographer for our Cruise Book. He also assigned me to the Intel Gathering Team whenever we came upon foreign ships that were deemed intel worthy. These were not my primary duties, but I had fun most of the time. I left the Navy after 5 years of service and became a Special Agent for the Naval Investigative Service (NIS) which is now known as the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS). Again, photography was not my primary duty, but due to my photography skills, I found myself being used for crime scene photography, surveillance photography and even designing methods to hide undercover cameras. I learned a lot during those years and admit it was a lot of fun.
I'm now retired from NCIS and my wife and I enjoy traveling. I also bring my camera equipment and enjoy capturing what I can. We bought ourselves a new RV which isn't the same as tent camping, but we can still get to those locations I love to photograph. Retirement is for having the time to do those things you love to do, while you can still do them. I hope to continue this journey as long as I have the ability to do so and I hope I can create images people will love to see on their walls, whether it be in the home, office or business. I found that a printed photograph printed on the right medium can be so striking. For years I printed my images on paper. With modern-day printing, I've fallen in love with metal prints. For most landscape images, I find the high gloss metal prints can show off the deep rich colors or the sharp contrasts of a black and white image.
