When you visit White Sands National Park, it almost seems as if it just snowed. Located in southern New Mexico, it's a site that seems almost impossible. But, its bright white sand is truly amazing. The sands here are constantly moving dunes driven by the high winds found in the desert of New Mexico. But, the sands aren't really sand. The dunes are made up of gypsum crystals. This is the largest gypsum dune field in the world. Currently, Archeologists are working to discover what was at this location some 12,000 years ago. The dunes have preserved footprints of animals who lived here during the last Ice Age and among the footprints found, are footprints of humans. Those human footprints are the oldest evidence of humans in the Americas, meaning that humans were in the Americas before the Ice Age.
This image is one that I've offered in both color and black & white. In the black & white version, I love how it draws your eyes to shapes and curves with no regard to color. The color version does that but gives you the feeling of the softness and coolness of the late afternoon as it gets close to sunset. They both work and I leave it up to the individual to decide which they like best. This image works very well on canvas but the other mediums work as well.
